It is the only remaining of the 4 city gates of Lo and even one of the few city gates and defensive towers still in existence in West Flanders. The canals, the course of which can still be clearly followed, served as reinforcement and demarcation of the city boundaries. For example, we know that the city was only about 400 m in diameter. The medieval city walls were demolished in 1581-1582 by order of the Duke of Anjou and the Prince of Orange. The Westpoort in its current form dates from the 14th century and was restored in 1852 and 1991.

Next to the West Gate is the legendary Caesars Tree. It is a yew, a coniferous tree with leaves that resemble pine needles. The yew can live for a thousand years.

Legend has it that on his way to Britain, Julius Caesar tied his horse to that tree and rested in the shadow of his crown.
