Ambleside Roman Fort enables you to step back in time and experience what was once a lively place. A great addition to walks in the area, the site is well-preserved, has information plaques and is free to enter.

Towards the end of the 1st century, the Romans built a wooden fort on the northern tip of Windermere as part of the conquest of Northern Britain. The site was soon abandoned but was reoccupied in the early 2nd century when a stone fort was built, the remains of which are what you see today.

On the shores of Lake Windermere, the well-marked remains of Ambleside Roman Fort date from the 2nd century. It was probably built under Hadrian's rule to guard the Roman road from Brougham to Ravenglass and to act as a supply base.
