My photos are from the July 21 flood, when terrible floods in the Eifel and the Ahr made people homeless and even killed them. The Moselle had a very, very strong current and all sorts of plants and objects rushed downstream.
The Romans already renovated their first bridge, and so much experience went into the second one that the pillars can withstand such flooding even after 2,000 years.
The four ambulances probably drove to Ehrang Hospital, which had to be evacuated. Even those who had recently undergone surgery could be saved. They weren't the only four who drove past the bridge with flashing lights.

Looking down the Moselle, the Markusberg on the left towers over the city center of Trier by up to 200 metres. The red sandstone rock face visible from afar forms a transition with a few steep passages between the Moselle valley and the foothills of the southern Eifel.

Even though the bridge has been renovated and rebuilt several times over the centuries, it is still one of the city's most important architectural monuments. There is currently discussion about closing it to traffic in order to protect the building structure, which should make it much more attractive for hiking.

Trier is a city in the southwest of Germany in the Moselle wine region and is located not far from the Luxembourg border. The city was founded by the Romans and still has some well-preserved Roman monuments such as the Porta Nigra, the remains of Roman bathhouses, an amphitheater near the city center and a stone bridge over the Moselle. The Rhineland State Museum displays, among other things, finds from Roman times. The Trier Cathedral is one of the city's numerous Catholic churches.

The first Roman wooden bridge over the Moselle dates back to 18/17 BC.[2] It was a pile bridge; the piles were dated in 1963 using dendrochronological studies.

The first stone bridge was built in 45 AD a little way downstream from the current location of the Roman bridge, as dendrochronological studies have shown.

The pillars of today's stone bridge were built between 142[3] and 150 AD[4]. The new Roman bridge is the third bridge at this location since the city was founded. With the help of waterproof sheet pile walls, the pillars were founded on the riverbed with basalt and bluestone blocks. The building material came, among other things, from the mining area around the former Hohe Buche volcano (in the eastern Eifel). The bridge has tapered pillars upstream to better withstand flooding and ice. In Roman times, a wooden bridge structure, a so-called truss, was built on the massive pillars. This could withstand the traffic well thanks to a ten-meter-wide roadway. Since the roadway was about 14 meters above the Moselle at normal water levels, the masts of the ships no longer had to be folded down when sailing downstream. Upstream they had to be towed because of the strong current.

In 1689 the bridge was blown up by French troops, and in 1716-1718 the court carpenter of the Elector of Trier, Johann Georg Judas, renovated the arch. On this occasion a crucifix and a statue of Saint Nicholas of Myra were erected on the fifth pillar from the west. In 1806 the western bridge gate was demolished, followed by the eastern one in 1869.

In 1931 the bridge was widened and given the current cantilevered pedestrian walkways. On the morning of March 2, 1945, the Americans were able to cross the undamaged Roman bridge towards Trier-West. For unknown reasons, the bridge was not blown up by the German troops. According to an eyewitness, there was already so much debris on the bridge that the cables for detonating the explosive charges were probably damaged.

After the Second World War, extensive archaeological investigations were carried out as part of the Moselle canalization. In 2012, the city of Trier announced an architectural competition to redesign the area around the bridge and the bridge itself, with the aim of better showcasing the monument. However, for financial reasons, it is hardly possible to implement the proposals.

Of course, I don't know if you plan to found a city in the near future. If so, let the Romans give you an expert tip: Find a nice location on the river and start building a bridge! Sure, it's not the easiest construction project. But you'll have immediate access to the roads on both sides of the river, which you can use as a great trade route. There's also a good chance that generations after generation will continue to use your bridge, creating a monument for yourself. It worked with the Roman bridge, after all. Its basalt pillars date back to the middle of the 2nd century, making it the oldest bridge in Germany.
