A wooden observation tower, the Augusta Tower, was first opened on the Hohen Egge in 1882. In 1899, after this tower had become dilapidated, construction began on the current Süntel Tower, built of sandstone. The foundation stone was laid on September 24, 1899; among those present was the heathland poet Hermann Löns. The construction costs amounted to 7,000 marks. The tower was inaugurated on May 17, 1901.

In 1910, a solid sandstone extension was added to the tower, housing a small kitchen, a bar, and a guest room. A telephone connection was installed in 1912.

In 1951, for the tower's 50th anniversary, all damage caused by age and wartime exposure was repaired. In 1977, scaffolding was erected around the tower to seal joints and cracks in the masonry.
...] In 1985/86, the operation of the restaurant was at risk due to a lack of water, sewage, and electricity connections. The Hameln-Pyrmont district and the towns of Hameln, Bad Münder, and Hessisch Oldendorf formed a joint financing partnership and began constructing electricity, water, and sewage lines, as well as sanitary facilities. The renovated restaurant was inaugurated in 1988. That same year, the tower and restaurant were transferred to the responsibility of the town of Bad Münder.

The tower underwent its last renovation in 2010. In 2012, access to the tower was closed due to the risk of the steps collapsing. The renovation of the stairs was completed in July 2012. The restaurant remained open during this time.
