An impressive place that you should definitely not walk past carelessly.
Loess is the most typical sedimentary rock in Rheinhessen. Transported by ice-age drifts from more than 20 million years ago, 3 - 4 meter thick layers of flue dust were formed. With its fertile properties, it offers excellent breeding ground for viticulture and arable farming. With its small-grained (geological silt) consistency of dusty loam, the loose sediment demonstrates high stability. Countless loess stone walls can be found along the Rhine terraces.
The vertical loess walls offer an excellent habitat for many insects, especially bees, wasps, bumblebees and ants.
