    Siegenstein castle ruins

Siegenstein castle and rule belonged to the diocese of Regensburg and was held by a family of the same name, which was first mentioned in 1253 with Ulricus de Sigenstein. The castle itself appears in 1281 as castrum Sigenstein. In the course of a complicated history of ownership, Duke Ludwig II of Bavaria donated Siegenstein to the Bishopric of Regensburg in 1282, which immediately entrusted the castle and rule to Konrad von Ehrenfels. This was quickly followed by various opening contracts, appointments with carers and pledges, including to the Bavarian dukes from 1410 onwards. In 1606, Bishop Wolfgang II redeemed the Siegenstein rule, including the already ruined castle, from the Prackenbachers. By the beginning of the 16th century, the castle had become so dilapidated that the Prackenbachers moved to their headquarters in Wulkersdorf. During the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes burned down the castle, which was in ruins.
The preserved wall tooth with its humpback blocks probably dates back to the middle of the 13th century, at least in its lower half. In 1368, Albrecht the Closner von Arnsdorf is said to have built the 950 pounds with which he had bought the castle from Hans the Zenger into the castle. In the following year, 1369, the castle appears to have been damaged in a military conflict. In 1431, money was to be built into the castle again, this time 300 guilders. However, the highly fragmented condition does not allow any statements to be made as to which construction activities took place when, except that the curtain wall was raised in one of these secondary construction phases.
The freely accessible castle remains on a rugged granite hilltop (546 m above sea level) still reveal the ring of a trapezoidal main castle measuring around 28 x 20 m. Of the approximately 2 m thick circular wall, only a corner fragment in the northeast and a short section on the south side, which still shows the beginnings of an internal wall, have been preserved. Both fragments have numerous armor holes and humpback blocks made of granite. The few construction details include two slit windows and a small rectangular window that is in a secondary wall extension. The keep probably once stood in the northeast corner, where a mound of rubble still bears witness to it. A hollow in the west side could refer to the former main gate. The residential buildings were probably on the south side.
