    The church together with the eponymous source is located at 1363 m above sea level. A. in the Katastralgemeinde Lantsch the community Breitenau am Hochlantsch. It sits enthroned on an artificial bay at the foot of the Lantschmauern, the northern crashes of the Hochlantsch. Only a good five minutes' walk away is the Gasthaus Steirischer Jokl, from which 198 steps lead through the forest downhill to the pilgrimage site. The only accessible on foot gem in the Almenland Nature Park is often visited in connection with Hochlantsch, Teichalm or Bärenschützklamm. Until the 19th century, the usual ascent from the Breitenau valley led over the Zirbiseggerhof.

        The legend first tells of a cattle that grazed on the slopes of the Hochlantsch and one day crashed. The animal could only be found after a tedious, day-long search and, to everyone's astonishment, had remained completely intact. At the site of discovery, a portrait of Mary was discovered next to a spring running out of a crevice. Word got around quickly and was interpreted as a sign of God's grace, whereupon the people flocked to the place in the forest. The fountain owes the attribution of healing powers to another story (see Kultplatz Quelle). [1]

        Hermits lived in Schüsserlbrunn for decades. The only two whose names are still known today were the Schüsserlbrunn-Flurl and the Maurermichl, who looked after a simple, provisional chapel in the 19th century. In 1874, the Breitenau pastor Josef Mogg commissioned Georg Häusler, a local hunter, to look after the place of pilgrimage. Under his care, an inn with overnight accommodation developed that attracted more visitors than ever. He was also instrumental in the construction and improvement of the climbing systems. His success was so resounding that it was decided to build a new chapel. Before the construction could start, however, extensive rock blasting was necessary. The Schafferwerke donated the site on condition that the chapel be preserved for posterity. The tree trunks came from the surrounding area and were laboriously lowered over the rock walls to the construction site. The gentlemen Schaffer and Mayr-Melnhof provided a large part of the wood, the construction was financed by donations and from the pastor's private treasury. The chapel was consecrated in 1882.

          Fantastically beautiful location of the beautiful wooden chapel. There are many steps leading up from the Breitenau side, but the path is worth it. It's best to come here when there's little going on - for example outside the Styrian Jockl's opening hours.
