The biosphere reserve is located in the southernmost foothills of the north German lowland and is part of the natural area "Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichgebiet". It is located in the Lusatian (Magdeburg) glacial valley and is characterized by a frequent change from wide floodplains and lowlands of the rivers with drier dunes and moraine areas. The migration of the dunes in earlier times resulted in the narrowing and relocation of running waters, which resulted in hollow forms that were often muddy. In these moored depressions, ponds were created as early as the Middle Ages.

The part of the biosphere reserve between Lohsa and Bärwalde is part of the Upper Lusatian mining district. This natural area is not only influenced by mining. The large-scale lowering of the groundwater in the vicinity of the opencast mines has contributed significantly to the damage to valuable wetlands and especially the bogs in the area.

Drainable ponds for fish farming have been created since the Middle Ages. Along existing, small rivers 1-2 m high dams were piled up and the areas between them were connected with each other by a differentiated ditch system. Little by little, groups of ponds of up to 350 hectares were created.
