The longest lava flow in the Eifel.
The violent eruptions of the Wartgesberg volcanism were due to the high proportion of gas in the glowing magma rising from a depth of around 50 km.
Similar to opening a shaken champagne bottle, the escaping gas tore the explosively escaping lava into shreds, which fell to the earth as still hot cinder.
After weeks there were quieter, since gas-poor times. On the western flank of the Wartgesberg, a basaltic lava flow made its way and poured into the Alftal. At that time the valley was already 85 meters high filled with slag from the Wartgesberg volcanism. The lava flow, more than ten meters thick, slowly pushed its way down the valley. Only after 7 km did the longest lava flow in the Eifel come to a standstill when it cooled down.
