The Residenzplatz is one of the most beautiful baroque squares in southern Germany and an architectural ensemble of world renown. Gabrieli's targeted planning for the complete redesign of the area between the south wing of the Residenz and Altmühl took place after the completion of the court chancellery and thus the front, rectangular Residenzplatz. In place of the older predecessor buildings, representative office and residential buildings of various dimensions and designs were built. From the outset, the extent of the future square was predetermined by the course of the river and the large prince-bishop's grain box in the east. In the course of a few years, the finely coordinated buildings of the Vicariate General (around 1730), the Kavalierhöfe (1734-37) and the Kanonikerhöfe (around 1732), which with their mansard roofs stand like a backdrop against the mighty background of the granary. The open-air space, which was to be understood as the "ballroom", was used for princely representation and festive elevators.
