Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino (Kaltern an der Weinstraße in German) is a municipality of around 8,000 inhabitants located in the Oltradige region. Since medieval times it was only called Caldaro, then in 1964 the phrase "on the Wine Route" was added as in other municipalities in Alto Adige. It stands at the foot of the Mendola and the lake of the same name is particularly famous among those who practice sailing and surfing.

Kaltern lives from wine: Kalterer wine and above all the label "Kalterer See" are well-known terms. That is not by accident. Caldaro cultivates 760 hectares of wine today, the "vinum de caldaro" has been documented since 1220, but it is probably much older.

Beautiful place, with a picturesque market square lined with historic buildings. It's worth staying here for a while, there's a lot to discover. A worthwhile destination for a tour or for a detour off the main route. Kaltern is considered one of the wine villages in South Tyrol and is surrounded by a Mediterranean landscape of vineyards, forests and orchards. The journey to Kaltern is an experience in itself. Recommended.
