Village Church of St. Marien and Willebrord

In the 12th century, Dutch settlers settled on the Elbe and began diking the Elbe. They founded the village of Schönhausen at its current location. The village church of St. Marien and Willebrord also dates from this period.

In 1212, Bishop Segebodo von Havelberg consecrated the Romanesque brick church to St. Willebrord. The building, which has retained its late Gothic character, shows a three-aisled basilica with a broad west transept tower and a square chancel with apse. In 1562 the place became property of the Bismarcks, who also received patronage over the church. In April 1815, the future Chancellor, Prince Otto von Bismarck, was born here and was baptized in this church. In addition, numerous epitaphs of the Bismarck family have been preserved in the church. The church was damaged during the Thirty Years' War. The damage was repaired between 1665 and 1712. As a result, the interior received baroque furnishings, the pulpit, the altar and the state gallery.
The wooden crucifix and the sandstone baptismal font date from the early 13th century.
