St. George is considered the oldest church in the Altmark and was built in the first half of the 12th century, the transept and choir in the early 13th century. The windows show the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Inside there is a Baroque altar and the organ built by August Zabel in 1818-21.

The town church of St. Georg is the main church in the town of Arneburg (Saxony-Anhalt). It belongs to the Stendal parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.

In addition to the first castle, founded around 925, a Benedictine monastery is said to have been founded in 981. However, in 997 the castle and the adjacent settlement were destroyed by the Slavs, who had been independent on the other side of the Elbe since 985. A new castle was then built in 1025, but the situation was probably not safe enough for a monumental church building until the second half of the 12th century. Based on both the original window openings and the structure of the field stone masonry, the nave may date from the 12th century, but the transept and choir were only built in the early 13th century.
As the Middle Ages progressed, the height of the eaves of the nave was adjusted to that of the eastern parts of the building. The base of the tower may be as old as the nave in its eastern part. Its western half collapsed once and was rebuilt in the Middle Ages.

In the city fire of 1767, the interior of the church burned out completely. The reconstruction was completed in 1774. In 1868 the tower was increased by a brick bell house and the west portal, following Gothic models, was broken into the tower substructure. At the same time, the equipment was largely renewed.

Between 1979 and 1985 the interior of the church was redesigned again. The pews in the crossing were removed and a simple altar table was placed here. Two bricked-up choir windows were reopened. The old altar was removed. The baroque altar and pulpit now installed come from the chapel of the former Holy Spirit Hospital in Quedlinburg.
