The source of every Lüneburg wealth can be found here: the salt. Until 1980, the salt was still commercially mined here, today the old production facilities house the German Salt Museum.

The German Salt Museum in Lüneburg vividly shows the history of salt mining in Lüneburg. From Beginning to Modern Times (1980). The city, with its old core, would not have come into being without the saltworks. The saline was so precious that it had its own wall when it was in its heyday.

The museum is open daily (including Mondays) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission for adults costs 7 €, a combination ticket with the water tower also 7 €!
