From the 15th century until about 1900, quartzite rock was quarried in this area for paving stones, mainly intended for the local construction industry. The name Steenput has been used since 1475 and refers to the quarry that is still referred to as 'career' on the Ferraris map. Constant Theys reports that the city of Brussels bought land from Hendrik van Witthem in 1473 to run a quarry there. The quarry was later used as a reservoir for the Steenputmolen, now Molen De Meurs. (inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/themas/17182)

This area is located along the Alsembergsesteenweg in Dwerp in the valley of the Molenbeek and is not to be confused with the Steenputbeek reserve which is located on the Steenputbeek.
Description of the area
Consists of 2 bunches. In one of them, outcrops of the Cambrian rocks, some 550 million years old, which were previously mined. Cobblestones from the Steenput adorn the courtyard of the Brussels City Hall. The other grove is much more humid and contains a varied flora of giant horsetail, cranberry and currant root.
