This mill was built in 1710 as a ground-sail mill to drain the Babberspolder.
Its elevation to a smock mill dates from 1888, when the Schiedam - Hoek van Holland railway line was constructed. The railway embankment would significantly reduce the wind resistance from certain angles, so it was decided to raise the mill. The costs were covered by the railway company H.IJ.S.M.
The beautiful shape of the stone body was preserved by first demolishing it about two meters and then building it up to the desired height.
