The Schwalmtal has been shaped by watermills since the 13th century, for which the river was relocated, straightened and height differences created for optimal use of hydropower. These artificial installations were insurmountable obstacles for the fish. Reconstruction of the rivers is now increasingly opening up ways for the fish to "migrate" upstream again in the rivers. The fish ladder at the Lüttelforster mill is a good example of this.
