Sasso San Gottardo Fortress with Extensive Caverns
Sasso San Gottardo is located in the extensive caverns and tunnels of the legendary Gotthard Fortress. Once top secret, it is now the largest publicly accessible fortification in Switzerland. The exhibitions in the Crystal Cavern, the Chamber of Curiosities, and the Caverna Grande explore the "Gotthard Myth" in all its facets. Guests can take the "Metro del Sasso" to the historic fortress. During World War II, it was part of General Guisan's legendary redoubt. Hidden deep within the mountain are ammunition magazines, troop barracks, and cannon emplacements. The tour concludes through a side tunnel to the spectacularly situated viewing platform.
Goethe Exhibition
The focus of the first permanent exhibition about Goethe in Switzerland is on his three Gotthard journeys. He not only found inspiration and adventure in the region around the Gotthard, but also collected numerous minerals there for his scientific studies. Without Goethe's journeys to the Gotthard Pass, the Tell legend would not have become a famous stage drama, and William would not have become a legendary Swiss national hero. The special exhibition "From Goethe's Tell to the Spiritual Defense of the Country" explores these connections.
