The South Gate is the oldest gate of Sluis and was built from 1399 to 1406 by the master mason Arend de Keijser. This is the old gateway from Sluis to Aardenburg. Through this city gate one came over a long walkway and drawbridge in the ravelin "Vriesland". A ravelin is a defensive island in the main moat to cover the straight wall behind the bastions. From here one could reach the mainland via a similar connection. The gate was in use until 1795 and used to be much larger. On the right at the entrance of the gate you see the old gatekeeper's house that was inhabited until 1928.

Zuidpoort provides access to the city from the direction of Aardenburg. Until 1399 there was a gate built of wood here, after which it was replaced by the current construction. This new gate was finished in 1406 and was much larger than it is now. The superstructure was demolished during the adaptation of the defenses around the city in the 17th century. Via a wooden bridge you can cross the ring canal here and reach the footpath.
