      Wichmannsburg derives its name from Count Wichmann Billung, who inherited this area from his father, Hermann Billung, and built a fortress here around 950 to protect him from the Slavs.

      The church, dedicated to Saint George, the fighter against all evil, was probably built soon afterward. Its north wall still shows what it might have originally looked like: beautiful fieldstone masonry with small arched windows.
      In 1659, the church collapsed during a service. It was rebuilt with a brick wall on the south side and enlarged windows. Further renovations followed: around 1750, a new half-timbered tower was added; in 1869, a new choir and a raised floor; and in 1960, the pews, pulpit, and organ were renewed.

      Furnishings:
      Gothic carved altar (around 1500), probably from the workshop of Lewin Storch from Hildesheim. The predella features St. George and St. Maurice, the central section features a rich Crucifixion, with saints beside it, the wings depict the 12 Apostles, and the upper section depicts Mary in a halo.

      Replica of a Lübeck Renaissance chandelier (1981), baptismal font from 1986.
