The free faith is an achievement that has its origins even before the founding of the city of Friedrichstadt. Everything started in 1619 with the ban on the Remonstranten in the Netherlands. They were persecuted in their homeland for their liberal beliefs and had to flee. As Duke Friedrich III. Looking for settlers to build their city on them and give them freedom of belief did not take long to think about them. They built a city based on the Dutch model and built a church building, which was the first explicitly remonstrant in the world. To this day, Friedrichstadt is the only Remonstantenkirche outside the Netherlands. The congregation consists of nearly 200 members and regularly celebrates worship services with preachers from the Netherlands.

The Remonstrants are one of the up to 15 religious communities that were formerly based in Friedrichstadt. The church has its roots in the Netherlands, the faithful were persecuted there and came to Friedrichstadt, where they were guaranteed freedom of religion. Even today, German-speaking services are held there once a month with a clergyman arriving from Utrecht, but the Lord's Prayer is prayed in Dutch.
