The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal is an interesting story. Already in the 19th and 20th centuries it was a 172.4 km long waterway that connected the Danube near Kelheim and the Main near Bamberg. Later it was converted into the Rhine - Main - Danube Canal. Its remains appear again and again along the Altmühl. The old lock is particularly nice to see here.

A very well preserved lock with a pretty lock keeper's house on a remaining section of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal. It is worth stopping here. For those who come from Kelheim, the information boards on the canal are very instructive.

An old lock from the Ludwig Danube Canal that is still very well preserved for its age. Is quite interesting and located directly on the bike path, it makes sense to stop here and take a look around.

Very nice section of the Altmühlradweg. I think it's a shame that e.g. this lock keeper's house is unused. I am sure that this lock keeper's house was awarded with a lot of fuss and nepotism, but that's the way it is in the country ;-)
