The Lauenburger Rufer is a bronze figure that was created by the sculptor and sculptor Karl-Heinz Goedtke at the suggestion of the then mayor of Lauenburg / Elbe Richard Reuter in 1959. What is the caller calling?

The people of Lauenburg still argue about these questions today and everyone has their own
idea of what the caller calls across the Elbe.
You might think that Goedtke deliberately left the question open in order to encourage dialogue
between the people of Lauenburg and their guests.
It is not for nothing that the following can be read at the feet of the 185 cm high statue:

"A boatman, whose boat is anchored here and waiting for cargo from the Stecknitz Canal, calls across to a passing Elbe ship."

A morning greeting? A bit of rude fun? An important tip?

In any case, a visit to the caller is a must when visiting the old town of Lauenburg,
as touching the shiny, polished thumb also brings good luck.

Karlheinz Goedtke's "The Caller" has become one of the most popular works of art in Schleswig-Holstein to this day. This is certainly due in part to its folksy depiction, complete with overalls, a turned-up shirt, and a typical Elbe boater's cap. The sculpture symbolizes the centuries-old tradition of Elbe navigation through the figure of the caller. The sculpture derives its tension from the varied twists of the body.
