                            The castle complex on Willibaldsberg was founded in 1355 by the bishops of Eichstätt. Its conversion into a prestigious residence under Prince-Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen (r. 1595-1612) was carried out by the Augsburg architect Elias Holl. In the mid-18th century, the bishop's court was relocated to the new city residence. In the 19th century, Willibaldsburg Castle was partially leveled. Today, the Gemmingen Building dominates the appearance.
