The restored castle now houses the castle museum, including a permanent exhibition on the Mägdesprung ironworks and an exhibition of sculptures and bronze sculptures by the Harzgerode-born sculptor Wilhelm Otto, the city library and the city information center; it contains larger rooms for public events and a restaurant (castle cellar).
The monument, which is owned by the city, is widely open to the public.

Today's Harzgerode Castle is mentioned for the first time in 1384. The then castle and the associated property were given as a fief to the Counts of Stolberg.
In the years 1549 to 1552, the castle is rebuilt into the present castle. It was included in the city fortifications. From 1635 to 1709 the castle was the seat of the duodec-princes of Anhalt Harzgerode.
Later in the 19th century, it was converted into a service building of the Forestry and Mining Office. Nowadays, the building houses not only the museum, but also the ballroom, library, the Heimatstube, a gallery and a restaurant.
The castle is a three-storey Renaissance building. Also preserved are the stair tower, the covered walkways and the round tower.

Only a few steps from the castle is a worth seeing market square with a charming town hall.

The castle to Harzgerode is mentioned for the first time in 1384. From 1398 to 1535, the counts of Stolberg are mainly feudal lords of the castle and the city. Thereafter, Harzgerode became the administrative center of the counts of Anhalt for their possessions in the Harz. Prince George III. von Anhalt had between 1549 and 1552 build the castle complex again.

1635-1709 was the castle residence of the Harzgeröder line of the Anhalt princely house. The names of the last princely family can be found in the immediate vicinity. So in the forestry "Wilhelmshof", in the former pit "Albertine" and in the "Augustenstrasse".

Over time, changing uses took place, the castle is now a cultural hub.
