    Loch An Eilein Castle stands on a natural island just off the north-west shore of Loch An Eilein, deep in the Rothiemurchus Forest. The castle was built in the 13th century by the Bishop of Moray. A tower was added by Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, in the late 14th century.

    In the late 18th century the water level of Loch An Eilein was raised during the course of estate works, shrinking the island and covering the causeway. Today the castle is an inaccessible ruin and is home to nesting ospreys.

      This fascinating island in the middle of the loch offers brilliant views from the shoreline - why not look up the local myths and legends about the island!

        At its closed point to the shore, the castle island would be an easy paddle or swim to. It is easily seen walking along the shoreline, and in the right spot you can hear echos bounce back if you call over to it!

          Getting a good view of the castle is easy following the trail around the Loch, and this trail can be taken to make a full loop of the Loch. Can be quite peaceful and sometimes swimmers can be seen in the Loch.
