The Espenhain opencast mine was originally planned as a replacement opencast mine for the Böhlen plant.
Reserve opencast mine for Böhlen, which is also reflected in the initial delivery location designation, "Neuaufbruch Böhlen." The objective of the reserve opencast mine was influenced by the decisive plans of ASW, which was in competition with DEA, to participate in the Espenhain program to supply heating and fuel oil for the Navy in 1938. Sdr.-Journal 15, p. 15. With the Espenhain field, a coal field was available close enough, practically across the road, that, given the emerging social developments, including Germany's efforts toward self-sufficiency and ASW's ambitious plans, this led to the independent Espenhain lignite and large-scale power plant with the Espenhain opencast mine.
The Böhlen-Espenhain lignite complex became the largest lignite processing complex in the world.
