Above all, the national monument on the market square, unveiled in 1896, marks Hanau as the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm and became one of their landmarks. The statue comes from Professor Syrius Eberle/Munich and perfectly expresses the intellectual collaboration of the two great scholars, just as the brothers were inseparably linked throughout their lives until their death. It forms the starting point of the German Fairy Tale Route from Hanau to Bremen.

The monument was inaugurated on October 18, 1896 with great participation from the population and has since developed into a landmark and central meeting point for the people of the city of Hanau. The Brothers Grimm and Hanau belong together - have influenced each other and have a common history.

The monument was restored for its 125th anniversary in October 2021 for around EUR 30,000.
