The Theater der Nacht was created in 1988 by the artist couple Ruth Schmitz and Heiko Brockhausen. In the mid-1990s, the theater group, which was founded as a touring theater, discovered the former Northeim fire station and made the proposal to the city of Northeim to convert the building into a puppet theater. Four years later, in May 1999, work began on converting the building into a puppet theater. After about two years of reconstruction, the Theater of the Night was opened with a ceremony in August 2001. The theater of the night got its name because its actors "love nocturnal figures, dreamlike stories and wondrous figures". Fairy tales, myths and legends are the focus of her artistic work. They draw their ideas and stories for the stage from the realm of the fantastic.
