Lüneburg has had the new port since 1976. This is well outside the city center and many citizens of Lüneburg are therefore unaware of its existence. The new port of Lüneburg is located in the east of Lüneburg on the Elbe Lateral Canal.
In the 18th century there was only heathland on the site of the harbor. In the middle of the 19th century, this area was reforested with conifers, which remained largely in existence until 1970.
In 1965 it was decided to build the Elbe Lateral Canal and just eleven years later the canal and the new Lüneburg harbor were opened.
The port not only has a connection to the water, but also to the road and rail network - so it is a trimodal business location. You cross the rails on the way to the port or the Elbe side canal. For loading, the port has a portal slewing luffing crane and two telescopic cranes, which can be seen from near the port.

The port can be easily reached by bike or bus. On the way to the port one crosses the industrial area of the port. Admittedly, as is usual for company premises, entry into the port area is prohibited, but the port and its industrial facilities offer an interesting backdrop as a starting point for walks or bike rides along the Elbe Lateral Canal.

The port of Lüneburg is around 15 km from the Elbe and around 100 km from the Mittelland Canal. Hamburg, Lübeck, Braunschweig, Salzgitter, Hanover and Magdeburg can be reached in one day by ship. There are some beautiful destinations by bike along the easily navigable gravel road towards the Elbe. Some quarry ponds and the Scharnebeck ship lift are on this route and are easily accessible.
