Greenside Mine's biggest claim to fame is arguably are the experiments of Operation Orpheus during the Cold War. Two large explosions were carried out to ascertain whether it was possible to obscure an underground nuclear explosion from being detected by the other signatories to the Test Ban Treaty. These days, the area is very popular with hikers and, as this bridge is close to the hostel, is a great place to meet like-minded people.

Practical footbridge with gate over Glenridding Beck in a very nice setting. That's where the journey to Helvellyn really starts.

Located near the old Mining Green Side and now a meeting place for the many intrepid hikers in the Lakelands who hike their way nigh regardless of the wet weather. We observed near the bridge a youth group that jumped into Minicanyon death-defying (in appropriate protective clothing) and despite the puny temperatures had a lot of fun. Very close to the bridge is the YHA.
