Stoop! A millstone!
October 6, 1954 was a black day for windmill De Lelie. The owner - with a not too good reputation - was detained at the police station, but asked if he could go back to the mill. A storm was coming and he wanted to secure the mill. History does not tell what exactly happened that night, but the fact is that at the end of the evening the mill went wild. The storm got hold of the blades of De Lelie and they started to turn like crazy. Overheating and fire threatened. The pelts couldn't handle the speed. They burst and shot, 2,000 kilograms each, straight through the thick brick wall. Fortunately, no personal accidents occurred, but the mill was seriously destroyed.

The De Lelie flour mill towers high above Eenrum. Only the historic church tower is higher. De Lelie was built in 1862 and used to be called the Veurste Meuln. Not surprisingly, there were still two mills at the time: the Middelste Meuln and the Achterste Meuln.
