The "holy beech" is located behind the abbey of Vallombrosa - e.g. accessible on the chapel path.

The tree is about 150 years old (but comes from beech trees that grew there more than 1000 years ago), not too big (circumference of the trunk almost 4m and about 20m high) and stands right next to a chapel.

This beech drives ahead of its fellows in spring and the leaves stay on the tree longer! According to the legend, Giovanni Gualberto (later the patron saint of Italian forestry) woke up one morning at the foot of the tree and a spring with crystal clear water appeared at his feet (the legend is written on a plaque in the wall of the beech tree).

Definitely a very nice and shady place 😉

The "Faggio Santo" (the Sacred Beech Tree), whose first plant is supposedly between 900-1200 years-old, while the actual one is around 150 year old.
