The Kuhberg is an archaeological monument. There is certainly a well-founded explanation for its existence.
Mine is this: When fishing and cattle breeding were still carried out here in Alt Gaarz and Gaarzer Hof around the turn of the century around 1900, there was no escape for cows and sheep on the paddocks on the lagoon in the event of sudden flooding.
For this purpose, an artificial mountain was built up to allow the animals a safe retreat. The fishermen also used it to look out for their boats.
When the water level rose, the cattle retreated from the salt marshes to this mountain.
At that time, the meadows were not dyked.
Since mainly farmers' and fishermen's cows grazed on the lush meadows, the term Kuhberg quickly became common. Similar places are also known from Holland, the East Frisian Islands and coasts with offshore mounds.
Today, the Kuhberg, along with the Schmiedeberg in Rerik, form the highest elevations and offer fantastic views of the natural landscape.

Located a little outside of Rerik, but you can stroll along the Salzhaff promenade, from the AWO parent-child clinic you can follow a small path to the Kuhberg (and who wants to go further to Pepelow) - perfect sunset spot
