The tower of San Giovanni owes its name to the nearby church of San Giovanni di Sinis and was built between the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century on the top of the hill overlooking the archaeological area of Tharros, offering a large domain view of the Gulf of Oristano and the open sea. It is one of the most impressive towers in the gulf, second only to that of Torre Grande.

Between the 16th and 17th centuries, on the initiative of the Crown of Spain, the towers of San Giovanni, Torre Vecchia (or San Marco) and Sevo (Turr'e Seu) were built along the coast of the Sinis di Cabras. Like the other Sardinian coastal towers, they were built to protect the local populations from the incursions of pirates and Barbary corsairs from nearby North Africa.
