Just 300 meters south of the town center, crossing the river
Almanzora, we find the old site of Cantoria during its Muslim era. Nestled on an imposing rocky promontory that dominates the Almanzora valley as it passes through Cantoria, lie the remains of this fortified Arab settlement that, for centuries, ruled the control of Medio Almanzora along with the nearby fortress of Purchena. From its sites and literary references we can extract an unequivocal perception of the relevance of this settlement during the centuries of Muslim occupation. A few meters from the perion in the west direction we find the remains of the watchtower or Cerro Castillo, which established a visual connection with La Torreta and at the same time exercised control over the Rambla de Torrobra. Within the fortress enclosure we can still access the interior of its two wells or appreciate its walled remains.
