It is usually said that the city of Bretten was once besieged by a large enemy army and cut off from all supplies. The food supplies became less and less, which is why a handover to the besiegers had to be seriously considered.

The fountain is very old, its history goes back to the late Middle Ages. It was laid out around 1400, and in the 19th century it was known under the name “Traubenbrunnen” because it was located near the “Traube” inn.
In 1880 it was completely renovated, received a fountain column with a dog figure and was then named after the Brettener Hundle.
In March 2007 the dog was replaced by a weather-resistant replica made of "Udelfanger sandstone". The sandstone column, the column base with the year and the fountain surround were also renewed.
