The old city cemetery in Göttingen is a historic cemetery with graves of important scholars, including Max Planck, Max Born, David Hilbert, Friedrich Wöhler and Otto Hahn.
The cemetery is located on the Kasseler Landstraße on the edge of the Göttingen Weststadt. The area has an area of about 36 hectares, on which there are about 40,000 earth and urn graves. Due to growing population was in 1879 under the Mayor of Göttingen Georg Merkel made the decision to create a new cemetery on the city boundary to the then place Grone, now a district of Göttingen. As a model served the city councilor Heinrich Gerber the Stuttgart cemetery. The first section, covering an area of 7.5 hectares, was inaugurated on 15 December 1881 and replaced the Albania and Bartholomew Cemetery as burial places. Already at the turn of the century, the construction of a cemetery chapel and a first extension of the area, which followed until 1963 five more. In 1975, the burial ground of Göttingen was moved from the city cemetery to the newly created park cemetery Junkerberg. Since then, only existing funeral rights are taken into account at the Göttingen City Cemetery. A repeatedly discussed transformation of the area into a park has not yet taken place. After decades no new tombs had been awarded, can be buried since 2005 in the city cemetery again, due to unfavorable soil conditions, however, limited to urn burials.

One of the most beautiful parks in Göttingen. Quiet, lots of nature and animals, and the gravestones and figures on some of them are absolutely worth seeing. Cycling isn't actually allowed here, but lots of people do it and as long as you don't disturb the walkers, it seems OK to me, because hardly anyone is out and about here.
