In honor of the longstanding Prussian Prime Minister and first German Chancellor, Bismarck monuments were erected in many places in Germany from 1868 onwards. Today apostrophized as a nationalist cult, they stand for admiration and gratitude towards the “blacksmith of the empire”. They also reflect the pride in Germany's international standing in science, industry and social policy, in its military strength and exemplary administration. With regard to Bismarck, this exuberant culture of remembrance ranges from memorial plaques to extensive structures with several groups of figures.

One of these Bismarck monuments is also centrally located in Gettorf under the oak from 1871.
