Bergen aan Zee is part of the artists' village of Bergen, which is a little further inland. Bergen aan Zee has existed since the beginning of the twentieth century. You will now find a number of hotels and holiday accommodations there. Of course there are also plenty of beach pavilions right on the beach.

Bergen aan Zee is a runner's paradise in the dunes stretching along the shore and further inland, with a variety of trails, ranging from sand, compacted dirt, gravel, to cobbled and paved surfaces. The beach town on the North Sea coast in the Dutch province of North Holland is part of the larger, original inland municipality of Bergen, about 9 km west of Alkmaar. In 2001, Bergen aan Zee had 483 inhabitants (and in summer probably double that in tourists ;-)
While it has some older homes and farms, most of the beach town is young in comparison. In 1906 a new seaside village was built as a result of private investment by large landowners and the mayor of Bergen, promoted as an artist colony. Bergen aan Zee has grown into a beach resort town, popular for beach walks, surfing and sailing. The majority of the visitors come either from the Netherlands or Germany, to enjoy the sandy beach.
