Skjern Ådal is home to Denmark's two largest wooden suspension bridges.

The eastern suspension bridge, the Lundenæs Bridge, is located where the Omme Å River flows into the Skjern Å River. It can be reached by walking from the parking lot at Lundenæs.

The western bridge, the King Hans' Bridge, is located near the parking lot at Skjern's bathing harbor. The bridge is built close to the site where the remains of bridge pillars dating from around 1105 were discovered during excavations to create a new riverbed.

The bridge also features a memorial stone for King Hans, who fell into the water at this spot one winter day in 1513 and contracted pneumonia, which later cost him his life.

The bridge's sturdy pillars are made of so-called "fleet oak" from the forests of Zealand, which was originally cultivated for the production of warships. The oaks were planted in 1807 after the Danish fleet lost its battle to the English, but by the time they reached "mast height" 200 years later, technological advances had already overtaken the project.

From the middle of both bridges, you can observe the enormous masses of water flowing through the river valley.

In picturesque surroundings near Skjern Enge, you'll find Denmark's longest wooden suspension bridge, King Hans Bridge. The bridge was built in 2003 as part of the restoration of the Skjern Å River.

The mighty pylons are made of "naval oak," which was planted in 1807 after the loss of the Danish Navy to the English. The bridge is named after King Hans, who tragically died of pneumonia at this spot after falling into the water. His memorial stone stands next to the bridge.
