The Church of São Francisco was built in the s. XIV, during the reign of D. Fernando, in the space occupied by a modest temple belonging to the Franciscan order that had been established in the city of Porto in 1223.

In the S. XVI, João de Castilho designed the Chapel of São João Baptista, but it was during the s. XVIII when the most significant campaign of works was carried out and that would give this temple the baroque splendor preserved to this day, looking like a church covered in gold, due to the abundance of gilt carving.

The Church of St. Francis, as it is called in German, was built on the site of a simple church. At the time of construction, the spacious complex also included a monastery for the Franciscan order. They played a key role in the planning of the church and had it built in the Gothic style. At the request of the order of beggars, a three-nave church building with a spacious entrance portal and a lower-lying choir room was erected.

For four centuries, the Igreja de São Francisco in Porto served as the church of the local Franciscan monastery. In the course of the great Miguelist war, the monastery was completely destroyed in 1833 and was never rebuilt.
