The tunnel is about 800 meters long and well developed for Levada tunnel conditions. The ground is uneven in some places, be careful when walking. You really should have a flashlight with you.

Nice shortcut to the "25 Fontes"
If you do not have much time and want to avoid the descent, start from the parking lot near the tunnel entrance.
So you can do the tour even in the late afternoon and has a relaxed way back;)

A little tip: you should ALWAYS carry a flashlight with you when hiking in Madeira. There are also extremely long tunnels, where otherwise nothing looks like a single point!

Instead of using the notorious cavalry tunnel in the direction of Calheta, I decide to return, so wander once more through 'the heart' of the laurel forest. Because the incredible, 800 meter long rider tunnel is only spacious at the beginning. After a few meters, it gets narrow, wet and pitch black, because you can not see the end.

Very long absolutely dark tunnel. On the Rabacal Valley side was bright sunshine. On the other side of the tunnel, there were low clouds over the hillside destroyed by the forest fire.

After the levadata tunnel has my magnificent view towards Calheta and the sea. The descent down is exhausting, because you have to descend about 1400 meters. The path leads down through a eucalyptus forest.

This approximately 1200 m long tunnel is 100 meters below the well-known rider tunnel (Tunel do Cavalo). It is very impressive and offers breathtaking views on the north side while hiking to the 25 Fontes.
