The castle dates from the Middle Ages and is one of the most important architectural monuments in the district of Cuxhaven. The castle is now home to an archeology museum and a restaurant.
The museum is open from May to September every day except Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from October to April every day except Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry costs € 3.

Very nice well-kept area with a castle restaurant, exhibitions, museum. A circular route leads along the moat. A few benches can be used. 10 minutes walk to the lake, a nice playground nearby.

The name Bederkesa - more correctly Bederichs-Ahe - goes back in meaning to a knight Bederich, who owned an Ahe here, a manor forest. His descendants built Bederkesa Castle on the south-western shore of the lake. The name was retained and later passed on to the place.
