The Altmühl has its origin here and begins its journey of 223 kilometers to the confluence with the Danube. The Hornauer Weiher is the official origin of the Altmühl, although it has several small tributaries. None of the sources of these rivers was defined as the sole source of the Altmühl, because one alone is too small to feed the Altmühl. Therefore it was decided in 1904 that the origin of the Altmühl is the lower drainage ditch of the Hornauer Weiher.

Here lies the official, established in 1904 by the Royal Bavarian Hydrotechnical Bureau at Munich origin of the Altmühl (outflow ditch Hornauer Weihers). The reason for this was the disagreement over the actual source, as several small tributaries of Hornauer Weiher are partially dried up in the summer. The pond has been dammed for centuries and approx. 700 m long and almost 300 m wide.

Here, at the Hornauer Weiher, is the actual and therefore official Altmühl spring since 1904.
From here on one can speak of the origin of the Altmühl river, which from now on is getting bigger and wider.
Everything else is just small inflows that ultimately flow into the source lake and these are sometimes referred to as Altmühlquellen, but are not really.
Some of them are completely dry in summer, but that would not be a reason not to consider them as the origin, see the Jagst with its often dry spring.
It was just decided to finally settle disputes about the origin of the Altmühl.
Still nice to go there and visit all 3 sources, it doesn't take much time.
One is on the grounds of a farm, the other in the middle of the forest on a hill which, with the associated lake, could perhaps best be described as the Altmühl headwaters.
But that was rejected by the authorities and thus the Hornauer Weiher is determined as the origin.
