The bridge connects the right bank of the Nieuwe Maas with the Noordereiland. The current bridge is the second Willemsbrug. The first was designed by C.B. van der Tak, was opened in 1878 and named after King William III. The second bridge was designed by Cor Veerling opgeleverdand was completed in 1981.

The Willemsbrug (Dutch: Willemsbrug) is, along with the Erasmusbrug and the Van Brienenoordbrug, one of Rotterdam's three large bridges over the Nieuwe Maas. It is a 356-metre-long cable-stayed bridge standing on two large pylons. It connects the centre of the city with the island of Noordereiland, while on the other side the small Koninginnebrug connects the island with the districts of Kop van Zuid and Feijenoord. For a long time it was known as the "Golden Gate Bridge of Rotterdam", due both to its red colour and the fact that it was the last bridge before the mouth until the Erasmusbrug was built. The structure is located at kilometer 999.75 on the Rhine and kilometer 10.40 on the Dutch waterway 102 (Nieuwe Maas–Nieuwe Waterweg–Maasmond), which ends in the North Sea at kilometer 46.17.
