The NSG is one of the most important in the urban area of Krefeld. Due to the abundance of structures mentioned above, despite the location close to the settlement and the associated disturbances, it exhibits a rich fauna and flora. a. for aquatic animals, including waterfowl and amphibians, swamp and reed brooders and dragonflies. In the waters with their well-developed vegetation zoning, especially underwater and floating leaf vegetation, there are plant species from the Red Lists such as water feather and frog bite. As part of the local biotope network axis of the Niepkuhlen lowlands, the NSG with its near-natural waters, deciduous forest stands and shrubs as well as the open grassland areas is an outstanding, networked link.
