Neuhaus Castle high above the Danube with its striking, square tower was built in the 12th century as a hunting lodge for the Passau bishops. In the 14th century it was converted into a fortress by the Schaunbergers. Today the facility is privately owned by the Plappart family, group tours are possible by telephone arrangement.

The ascent from the Danube is steep and quite rough in the first part, then it becomes comfortable (if you drive out the serpentines). It's a pity that you're not allowed into the castle complex - so I couldn't find a vantage point down to the Danube.

The pentagonal keep with a cloverleaf frieze and the unique mocking figure on the east corner of the tower are unique. While at the other corners two people and two animal figures act as gargoyles, here is a human figure stretching out its rear end towards the viewer. This gesture becomes all the more dramatic when you imagine the "human buttocks" in their original function as a water drain! The figure is often interpreted as a built provocation addressed to the Habsburg princes in Vienna.
