The castle built in the Norman-Swabian age and rebuilt at the behest of the Aragonese nobility, was transformed into a noble residence in the eighteenth century. At the center of the area defined by the four towers and walls, there is a fortification, the Keep, which is the oldest part of the castle.
There is no certain information about its origin, but the keep certainly dates back to Roman times as a strategic point to monitor the Carthaginian troops. Its natural position, controlling one of the most important communication routes between the valleys of Calore and Sabato, made Volturara a center of considerable strategic importance in the Middle Ages, equipped with a strong castle. Nowadays, only the ruins remain visible, traces of the imposing structure.

Despite the complete absence of signs, it is not difficult to reach the Castle, just continue along the main road of the town and pass the inhabited center. The climb is very steep, I couldn't stay in the saddle until the end! The castle cannot be visited but you can enjoy a fantastic view over the Dragon Valley.
