The pilgrimage church goes back to the snow miracle of August 5, 358. That day there was snow on the Esquiline Hill in Rome and Pope Liberius declared it a miracle. Supported by the Jesuits in Augsburg, a lively pilgrimage movement developed in the 17th century that lasted until the 1920s.
